Law has always been the most comprehensive field of social sphere. The study of law offers a plethora of career opportunities to the people who experience the vast richness of knowledge encompassed within its domain. In earlier times, a degree in law was mostly synonymous with a career in litigation. However, there has been a major diversification in the post-law careers over the past few decades. On one hand, the dynamism of the Indian Constitution allows the laws of the land to change as the society changes, on the other hand, it posses the challenge of deciding the road to be taken after acquiring a degree in law. The wide range of courses and classes available allow the students to excel in this sector, yet most of the law graduates find it difficult to live a dream career.
Following are the options one can take after completing law:
1. Join Services
Indian still strives over joining services, studying law not only gives you the basic platform but also the solidity in the field. One can either opt for PCS-J of their respective state and other states or appear for PCS services or else appear for the UPSC i.e. Civil Services.

2.High Court Jobs
Few people knew this but High Court offers additional services other than lower and higher judicial services. Services including those of Counsellors, Family Mediators, Review Officers, Additional Review Officers, Computer Operators, etc. These jobs are conducted by the High Court and individuals are placed in the districts or under High Court itself. As of Allahabad High Court, it conducts exam over 75 districts and selects the individuals under the mentioned heads. The same can be found under the vacancy column of the website, for Allahabad High Court the same can be found on: http://www.allahabadhighcourt.in/misc/vacancy_chart.html.
3. Litigation
Litigation is the least rated option amongst the new budding lawyers, especially when it comes to social litigation. First generation lawyers are seldom to find, and the ones existing are breaking the shackles strongly. They are inspirational! Well, litigation unlike other options should not be the last to be opted, if you have it and you can pull it, strive to be the best lawyer one can ever think off.
Note: I have always been asked whether being area specific at a very young age works?
In my view, it is perfectly working for me, I specialise in the real estate sector and family disputes but as of the others I lack my expertise. And hence the association. It works perfectly.
4. Corporate firms
Anytime you can join corporate firms, is a myth. If you are one who strives for success in life DO NOT EVER SETTLE FOR LESS- and believing in that kind of myth will definitely wind you away. If you dream of air conditioned offices and business meetings, Corporate sector is inviting you with open arms. But before entering, prove your worth, you will meet professionalism at its best. So strive to be the best throughout:WHAT MATTERS-EVERYTHING-your choice of college, your choice of courses-your choice of internships-your choice of additional certifications-EVERYTHING.
5. Politics
Most of us would know but could not say it clearly-- POLITICS-- this is your sector. Law offers money or power to its loved ones, so if you are the person who is attracted by this sector, it is the right field. Nonetheless, just google the top politicians in the world, why go far, look up to your own National government-BJP- Top leaders- some inspiring are lawyers. Policy making and implementation is the right course you should opt if you are interested in this sector, making public speeches, participating in National and International Debates and MUNs might clear your picture. Most of you might not have heard, there are running schemes of scholarship given to students for interning and assisting a Member of Parliament.
This adds. The main focus is on writing speeches and observing the lifestyle & activities of one.
6. Jounalists
Lawyers make the best journalists in the world. This is because we spend most of our time analytically analysing a situation. Tell a lawyer, that Mr. X committed a murder, a true one will never let it go, he would go after knowing how, why, what, etc. They would pen down the inquisitiveness. It would not be wrong to say that lawyers have impressive vocal orientation which gives them a better chance of excellence in this field.
7. Entrepreneurship
With the rise of social independency and with the upcoming scheme of Atma-nirbhar Bharat, lawyers can finally open their own incubation centres. These centres are ones those are helping the other start-ups with their initial papers works and loan procurement procedures. Not only this start-up is exclusive to lawyers and CAs but are funded and are a great initiative to stabilise. Such has been recently started by SEBI in corporation with IIT-Kanpur and vacancies for full-time contractual lawyers were created to be hired in such centres. So if you have the capability and patience of running a startup, this is your domain.
8. Other Jobs
Of-course there are jobs that are exclusive to lawyers such as those of legal advisors, panel advocates, advisors and others. So this forum is always open to litigating lawyers as well, as those for panel advocates and advisors, a minimum of three-five for some seven years of relevant experience is required. As of freshers are concerned, new start-up always looks for a smart and talented fresher so does a company under five years of experience. Relevant government jobs for lawyers can always be looked on the following platform:
So, the crux of the story is as long as you are clear with your vision you have no boundation ; for this field sees none. Lawyers are often referred to as butchers, this is because we fight ruthlessly to get what we can, but the positive to it is that at least you are guaranteed to get what you aim.
Its very unconventional ma'am. :)
Very knowledgeable 👍👍
